The Spectral Energy Distribution of the Isolated Neutron Star Rxj185635-3754
نویسنده
چکیده
The evidence suggests that the bright soft X-ray source RXJ185635-3754 is an isolated neutron star. We have now identiied the optical counterpart. The optical and X-ray data are inconsistent with a pure blackbody, but the spectral energy distribution appears consistent with a model having sinusoidal temperature variations with latitude.

On the number of accreting and cooling isolated neutron stars detectable with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey
We present limits to the log N − log S curve for isolated neutron stars, both cooling and accreting neutron stars, which are not active as radio pulsars, as observed with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and compare it with theoretical expectations. So far, only one isolated neutron star is identified optically among ROSAT sources, namely RXJ185635-3754 (Walter & Matthews 1997). Three more promising ca...
متن کاملBare Quark Stars or Naked Neutron Stars ? the Case of Rx J1856.5-3754
In a cool neutron star (T . 10 K) endowed with a rather high magnetic field (B & 10 G), a phase transition may occur in the outermost layers. As a consequence the neutron star becomes “bare”, i.e. no gaseous atmosphere sits on the top of the crust. The surface of a cooling, bare neutron star does not necessarily emit a blackbody spectrum because the emissivity is strongly suppressed at energies...
متن کاملTowards a Mass and Radius Determination of the Nearby Isolated Neutron Star Rx J185635-3754
We discuss efforts to determine the mass, radius, and surface composition of the nearby compact object RX J185635-3754 from its multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution. We compute non-magnetized model atmospheres and emergent spectra for selected compositions and gravities, and discuss efforts to fit existing and new observational data from ROSAT, EUVE and the HST. The spectral energy dis...
متن کاملOptical spectroscopy and photometry of the isolated neutron star RX J 1856 . 5 − 3754 ⋆
We present spectroscopy and imaging with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the isolated neutron star RX J1856.5−3754. Little is known about the nature of this source other than that it is a nearby hot neutron star. Our VLT spectrum does not show any strong emission or absorption features. With considerable care to photometric calibration, we obtain photometric measurements over the optical and ...
متن کامل0 The Proper Motion , Parallax , and Origin of the Isolated Neutron Star RX J 185635 - 3754
The isolated neutron star RX J185635-3754 is the closest known neutron star to the Sun. Based on HST WFPC2 obervations over a 3 year baseline, I report its proper motion (332±1 mas yr at a position angle of 100.3±0.1) and parallax (16.5±2.3 mas; 61 pc). This proper motion brings the neutron star from the general vicinity of the Sco-Cen OB association. For an assumed neutron star radial velocity...
